Archeologists and salvagers are engaged in a running battle over the fate of shipwrecks along California's coast.
In 1848, spurred by reports of fantastic riches, more than a thousand ships set sail for California. The journey was fueled by dreams of gold, but it often ended in tragedy as the Pacific coastline proved to be a deathtrap for many of the ships that braved its jagged waters.
SHIPWRECKS! heads below the surface to view some of the wrecks that scatter the California coastline. Many are at the center of a heated controversy between archeologists, who champion their preservation, and salvagers eager to recover large amounts of treasure that went down with these ships over a century ago. With hundreds of gold rush shipwrecks yet to be discovered, the tension between profit and preservation will no doubt continue.
All along California's rocky shore lie the remnants of ambition and greed--windows into a turbulent age and silent monuments to the lives lost in these dark waters.
