The saga of popular politician and pharmacist Johnny Volpato, who was accused of shooting his wife to death, then wounding himself to make it appear that someone else had killed her. Volpato was eventually acquitted, but opinions on the case's outcome still divide the city.
A peaceful community in the southeastern corner of New Mexico, Carlsbad is blessed with spectacular scenery that has made it a popular tourist destination. But the idyllic image of the tiny city was damaged in 1980, when a highly controversial murder case polarized its residents.
CITY CONFIDENTIAL explores what happened after Johnny and Elaine Volpato were shot at their pharmacy late on the night of February 5, 1980, leaving Elaine dead and Johnny with injuries to the hand and chest. We'll hear why investigators came to believe that Johnny was the perpetrator of the act, and that his own injuries were self-inflicted to serve as cover for the murder of his wife. But Johnny's lawyers--and others--believe that the police framed him. See how the case played out in two trials, four years apart, that resulted in dramatically different verdicts.
Though the case is closed now, the issue of Volpato's guilt or innocence still divides the tiny desert city.
