Expert Review:
One of the best films of its decade, 1974’s “Chinatown” revived the noir genre. The movie, set in 1930s Los Angeles, exudes cool menace, thanks to Roman Polanski’s directorial flair. Jack Nicholson is spectacular as private eye Jake Gittes. Secrecy and sex, profit and power – specifically control of LA’s water supply – are the pieces of a potentially deadly puzzle that lands in his lap. Faye Dunaway and John Huston give riveting performances. Robert Towne provides razor-sharp writing. By Jacqueline Fitzgerald of Film Noir Blonde
