COLD CASE FILES tells the story of justice deferred. Drawing on interviews with those closest to the cases, courtroom evidence and testimony from reporters and legal scholars, we see how long-dormant investigations were finally resolved.
In 1977, a sudden explosion and fire in a trailer home killed Donald Morris and his stepson, Christopher Styles. Donald's wife and two of her sons escaped, and the blaze was ruled accidental, despite some troubling evidence at the scene. 16 years later, one of the detectives originally assigned to the case re-opened the investigation, and justice was finally served.
In the second case, we'll follow the efforts of rape victim Jeri Elster to secure a prison sentence for her assailant. Though he is already in prison on another charge, the statute of limitations for the 1992 assault on Elster has run out, and the DNA evidence linking him to the crime may not lead to any additional jail time. But Elster is working to see that it does.
