The documentary “Darwin’s Nightmare” (2004) investigates the poverty of native Tanzanians despite their multi-million dollar fish industry. Nile Perch was introduced into pristine Lake Victoria in the 1960s, quickly destroying all native lake species and sparking an ecological disaster. While European four-star restaurants pay top dollar to have the plump and tender Perch shipped to them daily, little of the money trickles down to the Tanzanian workers who catch and clean the fish. With Tanzanians living in poverty and barely able to feed themselves, this documentary focuses on how the problem began and what outsiders are doing to perpetuate the situation for their own gain.

Expert Review:
A brutal portrait of life on the edge, Hubert Sauper takes us to the shores of Lake Victoria in Tanzania, where outside forces have wrecked the ecosystem. The film follows various characters who struggle to eke out a life and living, speaking with frightening casualness about their harsh surroundings. This is a dark view of the absurdities inflicted on the Third World by globalization. By Daniel Schindel of ScreenPicks
