Dive to the bottom of Grand Canyon's Lake Mead, where a well-preserved bomber sits in the still waters.
- National Parks Service executives talk about their plans for the plane.
- Visit the sunken bomber in some 200 feet of water.
- Find out how a Superfortress bomber ended up at the bottom of Lake Mead.
In 1948, a B-29 Superfortress bomber took off from California on a research mission carrying a strange piece of scientific equipment – the Suntracker. But when the plane crashed into Lake Mead, Nevada, the Suntracker was lost. And all records saying what it was or what the plane was studying were also lost.
For decades, the bomber was a local legend around the Canyon, but its location was unknown until a diving team using side-scanning radar located it in 2000. Their attempts to claim the wreckage were blocked by the National Park System, which oversees the Grand Canyon.
DEEP SEA DETECTIVES dives with the NPS team charged with assessing the wreck in order to determine what to do with it. The eerie visions of the cold war relic beneath the water are contrasted with expert testimony and fascinating interviews about its mission, its strange cargo, and the dramatic final flight.
