On October 21st, 1943 the naval destroyer USS Murphy left New York harbor in absolute secrecy and darkness--sailors were even barred from smoking cigarettes on deck, as their glow might betray the ship on the moonless night. But on their way to rendezvous with a convoy, the Murphy was struck by an 8,000 ton tanker that was also operating in darkness to avoid German submarines. The destroyer split in two. Incredibly, the back half remained afloat, and was eventually towed to the Brooklyn naval yards and rebuilt; but the front half sank with 35 men aboard.
DESTROYER DOWN! tells the story of that dark night with the help of surviving members of the Murphy's crew, who reveal what it was like when the tanker split their ship in two. The other half of the tale is told by the divers who recently discovered the sunken remains of the destroyer, shrouded with lost fishing nets and resting in 300 feet of water.
