This profile of TV's Superman includes extensive speculation about his death, supposedly a suicide, though many think otherwise...

He was "faster than a speeding bullet, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound." But TV's Superman hated the role that made him a star.

George Reeves grew up in Iowa, a popular, levelheaded, athletic boy. His big break came in 1939 when he was cast in the opening scene of Gone with the Wind, but it did not lead to bigger things. BIOGRAPHY® explores the decade of struggle that preceded his rise to stardom when he took the role of Superman in 1951. On the set of that show he met Toni Mannix, an older, woman with whom he became involved. Here, those who knew him recall the affair and the stress it put on him. The breaking point came in 1957, when Reeves became involved with a younger woman, enraging Toni. Two years later he was dead. The police said it was suicide, but many doubt this account.

Forty years after a single gunshot split the night, no one is really sure what happened, but the fascination with George Reeves' life and mysterious death continues.
