Described by his father as "a bloody exasperating child", at the age of 15, Bono suffered a tragic and devastating loss, when his mother died of a brain aneurysm while attending the funeral of her own father. It was at this time he found himself drawn to music. It was also during this time that Paul Hewson got a new name, Bono. Credit for this goes to a high school friend who appropriated it from the Bono Vox hearing aid store. It was thought that Bono sang so loud, the deaf could hear him. One day in 1976, he answered an ad posted on a bulletin board at the Mount Temple Comprehensive School in Dublin, asking for anyone who was interested in forming a band. U2 was the result. While fronting one of the most successful bands in recent times, Bono is equally renowned for the extent and effectiveness of his charitable activities including third world debt relief and, through his Product Red initiative, the fight against Aids and other diseases afflicting the poor.
