This 5.5'' Pre-Columbian sculpture is a reproduction of a metate, held aloft by decorative figures, from the mainland of Costa Rica and was made between 900-1100 AD. The metate was used for grinding chilies, herbs, and spices for sauces. Stone grinders remain a standard piece of kitchen equipment today.
Caring For Your Artwork
We have combined a high-density stone with a catalyst to create this statue. The result is a durable statue that stands up to the ravages of time. Centuries-old casting techniques still apply. Artisans apply the patina – a labor-intensive process that requires several layers and specialized shading – all by hand.
