11.5'' Admiralty Islands Bowl

Collected by Margaret Mead

Reproduction of a bowl collected by Margaret Mead during her 1928/1929 Admiralty Islands Expedition in the Melanesian region of the Pacific Ocean. The original was made of carved and painted wood. Around the rim, four figures with spiral tails represent reptiles. Reproduced in hand painted resin from the Collection of the American Museum of Natural History’s Pacific Peoples Hall.

Caring for Your Artwork

We have combined a high density stone with a catalyst to create this statue. The result is a durable statue that stands up to the ravages of time. Centuries-old casting techniques still apply. Artisans apply the patina — a labor-intensive process that requires several layers and specialized shading — all by hand.
