On November 4, 1980, Ronald W. Reagan was elected the 40th president of the United States in a landslide victory over the incumbent Jimmy Carter. Elected at age 69, Reagan became the oldest president.
Reagan was born in Tampico, Illinois on February 6, 1911. He graduated from Eureka College and began his career as first a radio sportscaster, then later landed several film roles.
He served as President of the Screen Actors Guild during the years 1947-1952 and 1959-1960. Reagan developed a penchant for politics when he campaigned actively for Barry Goldwater in the 1964 Presidential election. Reagan ran for the office of Governor for the State of California where he served two terms (1966-1974). In 1976, Reagan made his first attempt at the U.S. Presidency. He lost the Republican nomination to the incumbent Gerald Ford. In 1980, Reagan was successful in his bid and assumed the office of the President, a position he would hold for two consecutive terms (1980-1988).
Reagan during his Presidency is remembered for his economic successes at home as well as a substantial nuclear arms reduction treaty with the Soviet Union. Reagan, with his candor, humor and calmness during the burden of the Presidency, endeared himself to the American people.
