Audie Murphy was the son of a poor farmer in Texas cotton country. Audie spent much of his youth working in the fields; Audie only went as far as the fifth grade. He was abandoned by his father and his mother died before his 18th birthday. With the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Audie enlisted in the Army. Over the course of the next two years he would see action in Italy, France, and Germany. He would win 33 military awards, twelve for valor. He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for holding off 250 Germany Infantry soldiers and six German tanks. After the war Audie became a major motion picture star playing the lead in over 40 pictures. He played himself in TO HELL AND BACK, a film based on his best-selling autobiography. Despite his success as a writer and actor Audie would suffer the effects of battle fatigue, and became addicted to prescription drugs. Audie Murphy died in 1971 in a plane crash, at the age of 46.
