Iconic on-screen pair Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall star in the heart thumping noir thriller "The Big Sleep" (1946). Based on Raymond Chandler's debut novel and directed by Howard Hawks, "The Big Sleep" follows Bogart as a private investigator hired by dying millionaire to protect his troubled youngest daughter and thrust into a world of blackmail, sex, drugs, and murder. Bacall plays the eldest daughter who disapproves of her father's dying wish, leading the detective to uncover more dark secrets surrounding the family.

Expert Review:
Director Howard Hawks’ tour-de-force film, based on a Raymond Chandler novel, has perhaps the most serpentine plot in all noir. But the twists and turns are beside the point, which is: the divine writing and double-entendre exchanges between Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. He’s detective Philip Marlowe; she’s a socialite. She’s also his de-facto boss because her father hired him to track down a blackmailer. Wicked fun and wildly sexy. By Jacqueline Fitzgerald of Film Noir Blonde

Expert Review:
Bogie and Bacall heat up the screen in The Big Sleep, Howard Hawks’ 1946 iconic film noir adapted from Raymond Chandler’s hard-boiled crime novel. The plot line twists and turns in this whodunit, but the fashions are easy on the eyes. Bogie, as Private Investigator Philip Marlow, looks dapper in trench coat, fedoras, and three piece suits. Bacall similarly dazzles as damsel in distress Vivan Sternwood in everything from an iconic houndstooth suit to a glamorous sequined evening jacket. Vivian’s precocious younger sister, Carmen, caught my attentions as she tries her darndest to charm the stoic Marlowe in a daytime playsuit of silk shorts and espadrilles and, later, an Asian inspired gown complete with gold embellishments. And last but not least, the hardened salesgirl Agnes is quite the looker in a tiered black peplum dress with a gold brooch and perfectly coiffed hair. Film noir is at its best.
