Spencer Tracy stars as John J. MacReedy, a crippled stranger who takes a train to a tiny western town, in "Bad Day at Black Rock" (1955). Set in 1945, the one-armed MacReedy becomes a death target of the local town boss, played by Robert Ryan, and his army of gun-slinging thugs, when he begins to unravel secrets buried in the desert of this mysterious town. The crazed locals are determined to protect their dark secrets, and will stop at nothing to do so.

Expert Review:
Director John Sturges proves you don’t need a horse to make a western. As rugged and monolithic as the landscape, one-armed, cynical war veteran Macreedy (Spencer Tracy) discovers a hushed-up murder in a western community, and racism and greed seeps from under the veneer of 1950s small-town values. Tracy’s hero says little but his words cast a big shadow over the stellar cast as townsfolk trying to intimidate the man who’s seen it all and done more. By Bucko of Cowboylands
