The clever sci-fi thriller "Time After Time" (1979) ingeniously suggests that H.G. Wells, author of "The Time Machine," actually invented a device that travels through time, and uses it to pursue Jack the Ripper from Victorian London to contemporary San Francisco. Malcolm McDowell wittily portrays Wells as a prim fish out of water, David Warner gives a sinister turn as one of history's most notorious serial killers and Mary Steenbergen shines as a feisty feminist charmed by McDowell's gallantry. The directorial and screenwriting debut of Nicholas Meyer will win over audiences of all time periods.

Expert Review:
Malcolm McDowell has rarely been better than when he pulled off this tense drama that could have gone silly. As H.G. Wells, he has to chase Jack the Ripper to modern times, when his time machine works all too well. A primer on working real drama into a corny premise. By Marc Eastman of Are You Screening
