World War I Coin Collection

Introduced in 1909 to honor the 100th anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln's birth, the Lincoln Cent was in its first decade of issue during WWI. Victor David Brenner, a Lithuanian émigré with tremendous artistic talent and enormous admiration for Lincoln, designed the famous coin. The Penny's reverse features two ears of wheat in memorial style, symbolic of America's agricultural heritage. The elegant Mercury Dime was unveiled in 1916 on the eve of America's entrance into World War I. The design by sculptor Adolph A. Weinman was created in response to President Teddy Roosevelt's mandate for new themes on U.S. coins. Popularly called the Mercury Dime, the figure is in fact Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap, the Roman attribute of a freed slave. Minted of .900 Fine Silver, it is widely considered one of America's most beautiful coins.
