In association with Newsweek Magazine, IR looks at a growing epidemic that threatens to become a full-fledged public health crisis.
One in three American children is overweight. This number is growing steadily, and has been since 1963. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), if current trends continue, the human and financial costs of this burgeoning public health crisis will soon cancel out all the advances made with the decline in smoking!
THE SUPERSIZED GENERATION looks at the many factors contributing to this epidemic. We live in a food-saturated environment, and lifestyle changes like eating out, urban sprawl and families with two working parents are key contributors. INVESTIGATIVE REPORTSTM talks to officials from the CDC, the Center for Science in the Public Interest and the former secretary of agriculture for a top-down look at this problem, while overweight kids and their parents offer a more personal view.
Ultimately, everyone shares responsibility for making today's children an extra large, and unhealthy, generation.
