Examine the heated debate over the chemical castration of sex offenders.
More than a million cases of child sexual abuse are reported to the police each year. California alone has 68,000 registered sex offenders. PUNISHING THE PEDOPHILES examines what can been done about this mounting problem. One side of the issue, the Women?s Coalition, believes they have the answer: chemical castration. California became the first state to make this radical solution legal. One repeat sex offender decided he preferred surgical castration instead. And the American Civil Liberties Union is trying to get the law overturned.
INVESTIGATIVE REPORTSTM explores the controversy over whether child molesters and rapists should be forced to receive chemical castration. Interviews with those involved include parents of victims, convicted offenders, the director of the Sexual Abuse Clinic, an offender undergoing chemical castration, a probation officer, an ACLU representative, the president of California?s Woman Coalition and a state legislator.
