Follow three inmates through the parole process in this New England state.
It is a process that usually takes place far from public scrutiny. For the prisoners brought before parole boards, a hearing of anywhere from a few minutes to several hours can be nearly as important as the trials that put them behind bars in the first place.
Each state handles parole differently, and in this INVESTIGATIVE REPORTSTM special, well see how it works in New Hampshire, following three inmates as they find out what their future holds. First, William McCallum, a Yale graduate and former assistant attorney general, pleads his case for early release from his 3 to 6 year sentence for 65 counts of receiving stolen property. Next, Sandra McGuinley, a former addict who turned to prostitution to support her habit and became a successful madam, prepares to prove that she is now clean, sober and ready for a fresh start. And finally, we'll watch as sex offender Alexander Cole asserts to the board that the prison's treatment program has changed him, and that he is no longer a risk to society.
PAROLE BOARD offers an extraordinary, inside look at one of the most important aspects of the American system of justice.
