Tour three Colorado high country palaces that speak to the grand dreams and fortunes of their founders.
At the turn of the century, fur, gold and coal drew many people to the rugged beauty of the Colorado high country. And while life was hard and the risks were many, fortunes were forged from the bounty of the mountains.
ROCKY MOUNTAIN RETREATS visits the spectacular mansions of the most fortunate high country pioneers. Redstone Castle is a Tudor Revival estate built by visionary John C. Osgood a mile from the "ideal" company town he made for his workers. The $2.5 million home features gold leafed ceilings and Italian marble fireplaces. Next, tour the 67-room Glen Eyrie, home of the founder of Colorado Springs. It was built from lichen-covered limestone and weathered clay roof tiles to convey a feeling of age. But inside, it embraces the comforts of the modern age, with its own power plant, telephone system, bowling alley and a "Garden of the Gods." Finally, tour the Molly Brown House, home of the famed Titanic survivor whose fortune was made from Colorado gold. The Victorian mansion is decorated with the ostentatious style that was the socialite's signature.
