At the core of the debates: were the Amiraults themselves the victims of a national hysteria, accused by children coerced into damning statements of horrific abuse?

It was Labor Day 1984 when the allegations against the Fells Acres day care in Malden, Massachusetts began to unfold. A five-year-old boy revealed to a family member that his "pants had been pulled down" while at the school. Within days, the school was shut down, and Gerald Amirault was arrested on abuse charges.

As other day care abuse scandals swirled in the national headlines, police investigators became convinced that there had been a ritual sexual abuse at Fells Acres. Panicked parents, investigators and social workers repeatedly interviewed the children. Those children who denied that anything had occurred were labeled "not ready to disclose."
