Linda Sobek was a pretty, petite, vivacious 27-year-old model. In 1995, she had a successful career in the Los Angeles area. Her future looked bright. That is, until Sobek left for a job one day and never came back.
November 16, 1996, started like any other for the young model. She spoke with her mother, Elaine over the phone and told her that she had a shoot and would call when she returned. Elaine never heard back from her daughter. Immediately Elaine reported her daughter missing to authorities. That weekend, Linda's friend's and family hung posters all around Hermosa Beach where Linda lived and was last seen. The next week, Linda's disappearance was all over the news. Images of her saturated the airwaves. Police received hundreds of tips but their first big break came when a highway worker called police and told them he'd found some photos in a trash can. The trash can was along a narrow highway in the Angeles National Forest, an hour north of L.A. Police examined the contents of the trash can and found a loan document for a Toyota Lexus SUV that had been rented to Charles Rathbun, a local photographer.
When questioned, Rathbun became irritated and at first didn't want to comply with authorities. After being taken into custody, he then dropped a bomb-shell on investigators, he said while showing Linda a driving move, he accidentally hit her with the car and buried her in the desert. Rathbun lead police to the body but after exhuming the body, it became quite apparent to authorities that Linda had not died in a car accident. There were ligature marks around Linda's ankles, indicating that she had been tied up. To explain himself, Charles Rathbun would offer yet another story as to what really happened to Linda Sobek.
