Explore a troubling case that exposes the gulf that sometimes divides justice and the legal system.
Thurman Martin was a well-known, well-connected figure in the tiny Georgia town of Ludowici. But the 64-year-old "good ol' boy" was hated and feared in his family. And in May of 1997, his grandson, Billy Crowder, decided to do something about it.
When Martin disappeared, it was Crowder who called the police to report him missing. But when Joe Stanton, a friend of Crowder, was overheard bragging that he had helped murder Martin, the case broke open, and Stanton and Crowder were charged with murder, manslaughter and armed robbery. JUSTIFIABLE HOMICIDE details how the trial exposed the decades of abuse that Martin had subjected his wife, children and grandchildren to, and how Crowder had finally done what many others had wished they could. The prosecution, however, argued that it was a straightforward situation of premeditated murder. The jury sided with the defense and delivered a verdict they believed would lead to a nominal 5-year sentence. To their shock and dismay, the judge sentenced Crowder to life in prison.
AMERICAN JUSTICE® speaks with jurors, lawyers for both sides and reporters who covered the story to examine every aspect of the troubling case of Billy Crowder.
