One of Europe's most fascinating and controversial figures, Silvio Berlusconi is not only the Prime Minister of Italy, he is the owner of the nation's top football team, the leader of a media empire, the richest man in the country and possibly the most popular politician in Italy.
Silvio Berlusconi began as the ultimate outsider in European politics. See in this BIOGRAPHY® how his development from an entrepreneur to a statesman has made him a figure to watch: a man who combined business sense and political will to create a new type of politician for Europe... and for the world.
Born in Milan, Italy in 1936, Berlusconi earned a law degree from university, and by 1962 was on his way to becoming Italy's leading developer of residential and large-scale retail real estate. With this success he expanded his activities to include, in his Fininvest group of companies: media, publishing, finance and even sport - in 1986 he became chairman of the A.C. Milan soccer team and in the next twenty years built one of the most successful teams in the history of the sport.
In 1993 Berlusconi entered politics, founding the right-wing party Forza Italia, which was successful at the 1994 elections. He was briefly prime minister in 1994 and won the premiership again in 2001. In 2003 he faced corruption allegations relating to his business affairs and became the first serving Italian prime minister to appear in court at his own trial.
In May 2004, Berlusconi's government became the longest running administration since World War II. However, controversy has followed him throughout his career. His media empire has given him unprecedented access to a nationwide audience. His support for the war in Iraq has made him a lightning-rod throughout Europe. And his high-profile lifestyle and savvy media sense have made him a near-celebrity.
