Without gasoline, life in the modern world would grind to a halt. Like many pervasive things, the average person really knows very little about it.
MODERN MARVELS® goes far beyond the pump to document the complete story of GASOLINE, showing what it really is and how it is refined, transported and used. In the 1850s, when refineries concentrated on extracting kerosene from crude oil, gas was a bothersome byproduct that was usually flamed off or dumped in rivers. But as electricity reduced the demand for kerosene, the coming of the automobile paved the way for gasoline's rise.
Through visits to modern refineries, we'll see how heat and chemicals are used to "crack" the long chains of hydrocarbons in crude oil to create gasoline, and we'll follow the finished fuel through networks of pipelines to terminals where it is loaded onto tanker trucks for delivery to local gas stations. GASOLINE also peeks at the future of fuel, where alternative sources like hydrogen fuel cells and biodiesel may eventually replace gas at the top of the power pyramid.
