See footage from 500 feet below Lake Superior as divers visit the wreck of the ship whose loss inspired the hit song.

The late fall brings horrific storms to the Great Lakes, and Lake Superior sailors have long learned to fear "the Witch of November." Well over 6,000 vessels have sunk to the bottom of the largest lake in the world. On November 10th, 1975, the iron-ore freighter Edmund Fitzgerald joined their ranks, succumbing to 30-foot waves and 95 mile-per-hour winds just 17 miles from the coast, taking the lives of all 29 members of her crew. The incident would have remained a local tragedy were it not for the singer Gordon Lightfoot, who read a newspaper account of the sinking and was inspired to write "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald."

DEEP SEA DETECTIVES explores the fate of the ship that became legend, diving more than 500 feet in the icy waters to examine the 729-foot-long wreck for clues to her final minutes. Footage from over 20 years of dives on the site, including the mission that brought back the Fitzgerald's bell, makes this a gripping look at a storied incident, while relatives of the victims put a human face on the loss.
