THE CRASH OF FLIGHT 191 is a shocking tale of greed and deceit, arrogance and spin control, where truth and lives were sacrificed in the name of reputation and profit. In the afternoon of May 25, 1979, 271 people fastened their seatbelts for a flight from Chicago to Los Angeles. Almost as soon as the DC-10 took off, warnings sounded in the cockpit. Stunned observers watched the plane plummet to the ground and explode in a huge ball of fire, killing everyone on board.
As TIME MACHINE documents, the investigation that followed was a firestorm of a different sort: everyone involved - the FAA, American Airlines, McDonnell Douglas and the pilot's union - pointed fingers in an attempt to avoid blame; a key witness mysteriously disappeared; important documents and physical evidence was misplaced. Now, a quarter century later, some of those close to the case speak for the first time, revealing why key players chose to live with the "acceptable risk" of such an accident rather than correct a known problem.
