John Chatterton dives on the wreck of a freighter lost in 1983 to determine whether foul play may have been involved.

The Marine Electric was a 605-foot freighter that had been patched together from the bow and stern of a World War II-era tanker and a new midsection in 1962. By the early '80s, she was a veteran of the coastal trade, scheduled for dry-dock in the spring. She never made it.

On February 12, 1983, while pounding into storm seas off New Jersey, the Marine Electric began to take on water and quickly capsized. Only three of the crew of 34 survived. While the seas were rough, the ship had weathered worse, so what happened on that night? Survivors blamed the owners for sending an unsafe vessel to sea, while the owners charged that one of the survivors caused his crewmates' deaths by failing to observe basic safety procedures. Diving on a wreck that remains a potential crime scene, the DEEP SEA DETECTIVES search the rusting hulk for clues to the ship's fate.
