On a bleak Thanksgiving weekend in 1898, New England was engulfed by the perfect storm of the 19th century: a trio of tempests that sunk hundreds of ships and killed more than 400 people. But one tragedy of that weekend towers over all others: the disappearance of the palatial passenger steamer SS Portland.
Over the decades, the mystery surrounding the beautiful paddle wheeler has never dimmed. Several unsuccessful searches were launched to discover where and how she met her fate, but it wasn't until July 2002 that marine archeologists finally zeroed in on her remote location.
Using high-tech oceanic gear that meticulously scours the bottom of Massachusetts Bay, THE GHOST SHIP OF NEW ENGLAND tells the dramatic story of the doomed ship.
Striking ROV video images reveal the wreck, now festooned with marine growth, lying shattered 400 feet below the surface. The horrific state of the ship--completely sheered off above the hull--also paints a stark picture of what it must have been like for the nearly 200 men, women and children who were trapped on board.
