Assassination plots litter the pages of U.S. and world history - Julius Caesar's bloody stabbing in the Senate over 2000 years ago, the tragic killing of Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968, Itzhak Rabin's fall in 1995 at the hands of a crazed gunman. Each starts with a plan, is fed by a motive, and too often ends in the shocking murder of someone famous. Political coups, revenge, and madness are among the dark forces behind these acts. The killers who succeed in their mission secure for themselves a sinister place in history.
This one-hour special tells the story of Robert Ford, the man who joined James's gang only to become resentful of the legendary outlaw and hatch a plan to kill him. With expert interviews, archival materials, dramatic re-enactments, and eyewitness accounts, this program brings to life the man, motives, and means focused on doing away with the "fastest gun in the West."
After James' assassination, Robert Ford and his brother Charlie were pardoned, by pre-arrangement with the governor, but they felt the sting of public contempt. Charlie Ford committed suicide and Bob's fortunes sunk ever lower until he, too, was shot in an act of vengeance.
