By the time the Plague had finally loosened its death grip, it had claimed the lives of nearly half of the world's population in less than five years.

This lesson plan offers multiple perspectives on the ravages of this disease and its effects on European culture and world history. Journals and personal narratives from the 14th century take viewers inside the world of the disease as those who lived through it attempted to make sense of its origins and significance. These voices of perplexed horror and fear are answered by contemporary historians and scientists who help explain the sources of the Plague and assess the ways this unexpected pandemic in the 1340s altered the world forever. Insights are drawn from first-person accounts by Pope Clement VI, Princess Joan of England, Agimet, a Jewish servant to a wealthy Swiss nobleman, and French physician Guy de Chauliac.

This series of 21 video-based interactive lessons puts global history at your fingertips! From towering Mayan temples to the trenches of World War II, from the valleys of the Nile to the winding path of the Great Wall of China, see emperors and kings, shopkeepers and foot soldiers, peasants and slaves all come to life as our world's most significant transformations and events are explored.

This lesson plan includes short video clips organized by theme, primary source documents, maps, and other historical images, discussion and review questions, internet-based student activities and more.

Primary source documents include:

  • Eyewitness accounts by Italian author Giovanni Boccaccio
  • Excerpts from medical journals describing the Plague
  • Images of sculptures and drawings which capture the effects of the disease

Every lesson is designed to offer teachers maximum flexibility by allowing them to tailor each plan to fit their particular needs. The Multimedia Classroom series is available on CD-ROM (PC and Mac compatible) and comes with the full-length The History Channel documentary on DVD.
