The Americans' Y-29 forwards airbase in northeast Belgium was one of the most prized targets and crucial to the success of the mission.

Y-29 would be the site of one of the greatest dogfights in history as 20 American planes get off the ground to confront nearly 70 Luftwaffe aircraft. In the end, over two dozen German planes met their fate while only one American P-47 Thunderbolt was lost.
