GANGLAND boldly shines a light on the darkest corners of America, where criminals live by their own laws and brutality reigns. Literally billions of dollars, and tens of thousands of lives, pass through the vast gang network, which effectively forms a shadow economy rivaling a small nation's. Unprecedented access to the inner workings of America's most feared gangs, coupled with incisive historical analysis and conversations with law enforcement specialists, paints the most accurate and compelling portrait of GANGLAND on television. You can't get closer to the truth of America's gangs without getting "jumped-in!"
Twenty-six-year-old Carmela Murphy was out enjoying the spring day, talking to her twin sister on the street when the shots were fired. Jesse Woods, aka "J-Murda," member of the Almighty Black P Stones, was gunning for a rival banger who'd shot at him a half-hour earlier. His AK-47 found Carmela instead. She died instantly.
From its foundation in 1960 by Jeff Fort and Eugene Hairston — ostensibly as a youth group committed to community improvement and self-help — the Almighty Black P Stones has been a highly politicized and violent gang. Drawing the personal attention of FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, who sought to pit the rising organization against the Black Panthers, the Blackstone Rangers, as they were originally known, evolved into a tightly organized, brutally violent alliance of multiple sets spread across the nation.
GANGLAND hits the streets of Chicago's South Side where graffiti reading "Terror Town," "Cold Stone Soldier" and "Stones Run It" make it clear who's in charge. Investigators uncover the current bloody state of affairs and revisit the complex history of BPS, which includes the spectacular 1987 conviction of founder Jeff Fort for plotting with the Libyan government to carry out terrorist acts against the United States. In the wake of 9/11, the FBI has classified the gang as a "terrorist threat."
Rare, exclusive access to bangers and their turf shows what it means to be STONE TO THE BONE in this insightful GANGLAND episode.
