This is the story of Navy Squadron VF-17, the Jolly Rogers. Flying their beloved Hogs, the F4U-1 Corsair, they cleared the skies of 154 Japanese planes in 76 days of combat over the Solomon Islands in the Pacific Theater. Never losing a bomber to enemy attack, the Jolly Rogers destroyed the heart of Japanese Fighter Command over Bougainville and Rabaul, paving the way for the Allied advance. As related by the squadron’s skipper, Tom Blackburn, and four of his men, including Aces Roger Hedrick and Danny Cunningham, the events of 1943-44 are enhanced by splendid film footage, personal photographs, and the memories of those who were there.

“These heroes tell emotion-packed tales about victory in aerial combat, the loss of comrades, and the delights of leave in Australia. An excellent piece of oral history.” -- The Library Journal

Fighting 17: The Jolly Rogers is the first film in the American Hero Series, the critically acclaimed winner of over 10 prestigious awards. The Star Tribune calls the interviews “powerful” and says, “there is nothing sanitized about these documentaries.” The Pioneer Press says, “Impressively produced and edited. [The results are] totally unlike the routine ‘I was there documentary.’”
