Notable gritty director Sam Fuller helmed this inventive Western tale which turns the familiar story paradigms upside down. Jessica Drummond (Barbara Stanwyck) is the tough as nails landowner who rules the roost thanks to her posse of hired guns. Along comes United States Marshall Bonnell (Barry Sullivan) and his brothers Wes (Gene Barry) and Chico (Robert Dix) to restore law and order. Things get messy when Jessica makes a romantic play for Bonnell but he's only got eyes for female gunslinger Louvenia (Eve Brent). Everything builds up to an epic showdown the likes of which the Old West has never seen!

Expert Review:
Thundering hooves announce the 40 hired guns of tough-as-nails ranch queen Jessica Drummond (Barbara Stanwyck), who likes strong men with big (ahem) guns. Shot through with double entrendes and stylized camerawork predating spaghetti westerns’ theatricality, Forty Guns is one of the few oaters to show a woman as a match for the men around her. Sure, she falls for the reformed gunslinger in the end, but it’s all worth seeing Stanwyck purr through dialogue that explains exactly what guns symbolize. By Bucko of Cowboylands
