Dressed in a formal collar and tie, father reads to his family, probably during the presidency of Woodrow Wilson (1912 - 1920). His wife and children are also well dressed and they sit in a well-appointed parlor.

The book is not specified. The children were probably accustomed to stories that ended with a moral lesson because they and their peers often learned how to read and spell from the McGuffey Readers. Named after the Rev. William Holmes McGuffey, who wrote it, this famous series sold 122 million copies between 1836 and 1920.

A later generation would learn to read from stories about a similar middle class family of Mother, Father, Dick and Sally who shared the house with Spot the dog and Puff the cat.
