Television history will be made with WWII in HD, the first WWII documentary in full, immersive HD color. Viewers will experience the war as if they were actually there, surrounded by the real sights and sounds of the battlefields. Culled from thousands of hours of lost and rare color archival footage gathered from a worldwide search through basements and archives, WWII in HD will change the way the world sees this defining conflict.

You will meet a group of soldiers who represented different branches of the service and fought in each of the major theaters of war. Their wartime diaries and journals show in visceral detail what the war was really like. They lived, triumphed, and sometimes died in a conflict so huge it threatened to dwarf them, but couldn’t. It is history told from a profoundly human point of view.

Through a meticulous process that refines and enhances clarity to the lost color footage, the sights and sounds of war come to life. The series begins in 1940, when the free people of the world find themselves on the verge of defeat, and charts the long, hard road to victory. It includes never-before-seen footage of pivotal battles like Tarawa, Anzio, Attu, New Guinea, Battle of the Bulge, Market Garden, Okinawa, Normandy, naval engagements, and bombing raids. WWII in HD also features rare footage of military and political leaders like Roosevelt, Hitler, Patton, and Rommel, seen for the first time with high-definition clarity. The power of the footage and the individual journeys of the soldiers reveal the civilian toll at Nazi Concentration Camps and in cities wrecked by war.

WWII in HD The Air War DVD - WWII IN HD: THE AIR WAR presents the untold story of the American 8th Air Force’s bloody battle to defeat the German Luftwaffe in the months leading up to D-Day. Told through the gripping, first person accounts of three American airmen and Stars & Stripes reporter Andy Rooney, The Air War showcases breathtaking aerial combat – original, color footage, never before seen by most Americans – of the B-17s “Flying Fortresses”, P-47 “Thunderbolts” and P-51 “Mustangs” on missions such as Regensburg, Schweinfurt and Berlin. Never-before-seen 8mm footage of the airmen on the bases, the devastation in Germany, and the Luftwaffe perspective is also highlighted.

Flying 25,000 feet above the earth in oxygen-devoid air, and temperatures as low as 50 below zero, the 8th Air Force fought a war unlike anything ever before experienced. By the end, they would suffer more than 26,000 combat deaths – more than the US Marines lost in all of World War II.

This two-hour special is narrated by Emmy nominated actor, Rob Lowe. Characters are voiced by: Casey Affleck (as B-17 bombardier Joe Armanini); Sean Astin (as P-47 fighter pilot Steve Pisanos); Chris O’Donnell (as B-17 pilot John Gibbons); Elijah Wood (as Stars & Stripes reporter Andy Rooney)

To create this series, HISTORY launched an exhaustive worldwide search for color footage. As a result, WWII IN HD: THE AIR WAR draws upon footage unearthed from archives and private collections across the globe. HISTORY preserved and restored this footage ― some of which has not been seen since the 1940s ― and converted it to HD for unprecedented clarity. An exceptional Dolby “soundscape” enhances the striking visuals and brings them to life as never before.

Dig deep beneath the surface of our collective understanding of the Third Reich as HISTORY unearths what we don’t know about the individuals who comprised one of the most fascinating and complex regimes of recent history. THIRD REICH: THE RISE AND FALL uncovers familiar anecdotes and fascinating details about the people who comprised the Nazi Party, and raids the treasure trove of archives the Nazis left behind, including rarely seen German newsreel recordings along with other unique footage carried home by Russian troops.
