Created by Alexander Hamilton in 1790, the US Coast Guard started as at ten ship fleet designed to enforce trade laws and prevent piracy. Since its inception, the USCG has grown with America and now patrols over 16,000 miles of coastline.
In addition to ensuring nautical safety throughout America's ports and waters, the USCG fights illegal immigration, international terrorism, and the spread of narcotics, all with fewer members than the New York City Police Department. Recently, their role has been expanded again to serve the Department of Homeland Security.
