I've watched every episode of A&E's Intervention and this one moved me the most. I am a recovering alcoholic (21 years sober) and AA has played a huge role in my recovery but they caution us to NOT compare ourselves to someone else's addiction or recovery.

So I try not to but I do-everyone does on some level. Bret is the one person with whom I probably identify the most. Also, without spoiling the end, it is THE most heart wrenching of all the Intervention episodes. I can identify with Bret because alcohol was my addiction as it was his. Also, he was a "functioning" alcoholic as was I. I certainly do not mean that we were any "better"-both Bret and I were drunks who got sober but I just can't relate on a personal level with some of the subjects in Intervention-the women who prostitute themselves to get the money to buy their drugs or the addicts/alcoholics who live with friends and family who greatly enable them by sometimes buying their drugs for them. This is done with the best intentions but it doesn't help the addict in any way.
I recently recommended this episode to a friend who was trying to help a friend of his who had a very bad drinking problem. The alcoholic was similar to Bret-he had a job and children the same ages as Bret's and I thought he would be more open to watching this episode of Intervention than any other one. And he did.
The ending is so sad and shows how incidious this disease of addiction can be. But be prepared to weep.

This was my favorite episode. It was a heart wrenching look at what alcoholism and addiction does to our loved ones, especially our kids. The kids have to grow up and be the parents of the household. They are too often put in the middle of two parents, one an addict and the other an enabler. And their insights into these experiences are brutally honest and wise beyond their years. And it was a success in that Bret got sober, and was able to go to his son's and daughter's sporting events and be there emotionally for them. Watch this episode for the realities of addiction.

As someone who faced a similar situation involving my own children, it brought me back to that awful time in my life. My children were the world to me and you can see that they mean everything to Bret. Clearly he is a good man, just he has deluded himself for a long time that he can function as an alcoholic - until his world begins to fall apart. If only he had gone to treatment and addressed the physical side sooner in his life. I feel for Bret and his family.
