The chicago viewer has it all wrong, this episode did not become about the father, and he is not a sorry man, he is a good father who refuses to let his life be controlled and ruined by his daughter who fakes an illness. She does have an illness and that is an eating disorder, but the episode states that she can swallow and the tube was only supposed to be short term. The father is unlike most parents and no longer feeds into her addiction, and no longer enables. He has decided to take control of his own life, and has moved on, which is what most interventionists have to tell parents to do.

This episode underscores how adult children continue to bare the scars of thoughtless, uncaring, callous parents. The focus of this episode is Nicole, a woman who was molested repeatedly by a neighbor. Her father, one of the most sorry excuses for a man I've ever seen, responds by telling Nicole to essentially "get over it." This pitiful individual becomes the real focus of the episode as it becomes clear that while the Nicole's molester set things in motion, her father solidified her path to her future and ongoing issues.
