Recently released tapes offer an inside view of LBJ's White House during the Vietnam conflict.

Taking office after Kennedy's assassination, Lyndon Johnson inherited an administration that was committed to a war half a world away. Eventually, the weight of that burden brought America to its knees and toppled LBJ's presidency.

LBJ AND VIETNAM offers an extraordinary inside view of a presidency in crisis and the personal torment of a man torn between completing the task at hand and the unbearable cost of doing so. Much of the material in this revelatory program comes from secret audiotapes Johnson made of phone conversations, discussions and cabinet meetings, which have only recently been released. In them, Johnson, Cyrus Vance, Robert McNamara and other key administration officials discuss strategies, argue the merits of continuing the fight or accepting defeat, and debate the mounting domestic problems, offering a gripping view of the inner workings of the presidency during these tumultuous years. Dramatic re-enactments bring many of these compelling scenes to life.

LBJ AND VIETNAM: IN THE EYE OF THE STORM is the agonizing story of a leader left to carry on an unwanted conflict.
