The Oscar-winning documentary "Marjoe" (1972) explores the life of real-life evangelist Marjoe Gortner, who began preaching at the age of three and performing marriages one year later. Using home movies, interviews and footage of Gortner leading revival meetings, the film details how this admitted con artist was able to convince and excite audiences with his fiery performances. At the time of the movie's release, Gortner was 28 years old, and announced that he would retire from the pulpit. He went on to become an actor, starring in numerous B-films and in the classic disaster film "Earthquake" (1974).

Expert Review:
Marjoe Gortner was a child prodigy of charismatic preaching, a popular traveling attraction throughout his youth. Now all grown up and quite dissatisfied with televangelism and revival culture, he has a film crew follow him as he exposes the tricks of the trade. He shows how to lay healing hands, speak in tongues, and fleece as much money as possible from a flock. This film is as much about hucksterism as it is about popular religion, and the blurry line between the two. By Daniel Schindel of ScreenPicks
