In a wealthy pocket of Virginia, the murder of a polo star by his heiress girlfriend shocks an elite community.

Middleburg is horse country, a luxuriant green pocket of northern Virginia an hour from Washington, where many of the nation's elite have homes among the hills and vineyards. Here, polo is the game of choice, and the wealthy spare no expense in pursuit of the sport. Thousands are spent on horses and even more to import the best polo talents, especially riders from Argentina.

One autumn morning in 1997, on a 300-acre horse farm, Argentine polo star Roberto Villegas was killed by his heiress girlfriend, Susan Cummings. His abusive past led many to assume it was self-defense, but no one knew for sure. Cummings was heir to a billion-dollar arms-trading fortune and had led a charmed life. She was also an expert shot. The rocky relationship came to an abrupt end on September 7, 1997. After a heated argument, Villegas allegedly came at Cummings with a knife. She pulled a 9-mm pistol and fired four shots into Villegas' chest and throat. Middleburg police arrested Cummings, but the case was far from open-and-shut.

Prosecutors contended that she ambushed Villegas. She claimed it was self-defense. Which story would the jury believe? The verdict shocked many in exclusive Virginia's polo set.
