In the years after World War I, the military leaders of France, unconvinced that the conditions of the Versailles treaty would prevent future aggression, decided to develop a way to defend their nation from possible German invasion. The solution arrived at was a string of small and large forts stretching from Dunkirk into the Alps.
Named for the French Minister of War, THE MAGINOT LINE was designed to be a stopgap--to hold back invading troops until the French Army could arrive and engage the enemy. But with human resources depleted and tours of duty at an all-time low, the French soon began to think of the line as a substitute for manpower. It was a disastrous assumption, made worse by the fact that Belgian neutrality during WWII invited the Germans to flank the line, avoiding its defenses entirely.
MODERN MARVELS® travels the length of the Maginot Line, touring the impressive fortifications that utterly failed to do what their designers envisioned.
