You can't fight a war unless you can deliver the manpower and equipment. A LOT of manpower and equipment, and that's where these awesome machines come in.
- The ultimate celebration and investigation of engineering excellence.
- Learn the incredible capabilities of the Osprey, the Chinook and "RO-RO" ships.
- For over a decade, MODERN MARVELS has brought grand stories to life.
Celebrating ingenuity, invention and imagination brought to life on a grand scale, MODERN MARVELS® tells the fascinating stories of the doers, dreamers and sometime-schemers who created everyday items, technological breakthroughs and man-made wonders.
Actual combat is a small component of a military campaign. Wars are won and lost on the supply line. And that's where the fabulous machines profiled in MORE MILITARY MOVERS come in. In this MODERN MARVELS® learn the background, the capabilities, the capacities, and ideal deployments of these critical transports in the armed forces lineup.
The CV-22 Osprey is designed to combine the best qualities of a helicopter with the best qualities of a fixed-wing aircraft. For all of its ingenuity and promise, the Osprey has had a tumultuous development period. These troubles will be examined as Osprey advocates explain how the aircraft's shortcomings have been worked out. Discover how this hybrid aircraft has overcome controversy to become mission-ready.
Take a good, long look at the Boeing CH-47, the venerable Chinook helicopter that first took flight in 1961. Over four decades later, this versatile, twin engine, tandem rotor, heavy lift copter remains a major military workhorse. Today's model Chinook has a stunning maximum payload of 24,000 pounds and a top speed of 180 mph.
Also spotlighted are LMSRs, which are some of the largest non-combatant ships in the military. Reaching nearly a thousand feet in length, they are capable of carrying an entire U.S. Army task force. The so-called "RO-RO"s (Roll-on/Roll-off), adapted from civilian commercial applications, can offload a stunning amount of ordnance in just hours.
It's nice to know the enemy is never really out of reach.
