A peaceful South Carolina town is shocked when the death of a woman turns into a sordid murder case involving her drug-dealing husband, a strip club bouncer, a prominent politician, a Catholic bishop, and key witnesses from all walks of Southern society.
Resembling a community of the 1850s, Newberry, South Carolina is one of the best-preserved towns in the nation; every building in its downtown district is on the National Register of Historic Places. And if the peaceful people of Newberry take anything seriously, it's politics, religion, and family. In 1994 all three were put to the test.
CITY CONFIDENTIAL: NEWBERRY recounts that on the night of June 12, 1994, Newberry police found the body of Vickie Lander Beckham in her car on a local back road. The case quickly turned into a sordid tale of murder involving Vickie's husband, a strip club bouncer, a state senator and a Catholic bishop. Vickie was the daughter of State Senator James Lander. Her husband, Stephen Beckham, was the son of a retired Catholic bishop and deeply involved in the distribution of hardcore drugs, using a Myrtle Beach strip joint as a front. Richard Anderson was a bouncer at the club. The two men began to suspect that Beckham's wife knew about the drugs. Something had to be done...
NEWBERRY reveals what happened while reliving the investigation and trial that galvanized the town.
