INVESTIGATIVE REPORTS follows three Nevada criminals through the parole process and witnesses the hearings where their future is decided.
With mandatory sentencing and an increasingly inflexible law-and-order outlook in America, our jails are becoming more and more crowded. But another element of the justice system is also feeling the effects--more than 700,000 convicted felons are serving out their sentences on parole.
Bill Kurtis and the INVESTIGATIVE REPORTSTM team head to Nevada for a behind-the-scenes look at how the parole system works in that state. The program provides a detailed analysis of three cases: a man serving a life sentence for raping a woman on a pool table; a crook who stole $10,000 in jewelry from a Las Vegas casino; and a woman arrested for soliciting prostitution despite being HIV positive. For each one, we'll examine the reasons for and against their release, then see what happens when their case is presented to the board.
PAROLE BOARD: NEVADA illustrates the factors that must be considered when the safety of society is balanced against the realities of a penal system pushed to the limits.
