A babysitter convicted of felony homicide contests his sentence from death row.

  • Hear from Kenny Richey, sentenced to die for setting a fatal fire.
  • Experts analyze the details that cast his conviction into doubt.
  • An objective look at a case which raises serious questions about the death penalty.

Early on a June morning in 1986 a fire in Columbus Grove, Ohio, claimed the life of 2-year-old Cynthia Collins. Witnesses claimed that her babysitter, 21-year-old Kenny Richey, had threatened to burn the apartment building down earlier that night. As a result, he was arrested and charged with starting the fire.

At trial, the prosecution argued that Richey set the fire to kill his ex-girlfriend who was sleeping with her new lover in the apartment below. But the case was not open-and-shut; there were no witnesses, the meager physical evidence had been tainted by investigators and police never found any traces of accelerant on Richey's clothes. Nevertheless, Richey was sentenced to death after a trial where he was represented by an overmatched public defender.

AMERICAN JUSTICE® re-opens the investigation and interviews those on both sides of the controversial case, including Richey, who continues to proclaim his innocence from death row.
