"They're here!" Paranormal activity invades a deceptively ordinary suburban home in "Poltergeist" (1982). JoBeth Williams and Craig T. Nelson play loving spouses who believe that supernatural creatures have infiltrated their house with designs on their youngest child, Heather O'Rourke. Directed by Tobe Hooper of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre," "Poltergeist" bears the influence of producer/co-writer Steven Spielberg with its thrilling set-pieces, clever jokes and insight into Middle-American anxieties. Zelda Rubinstein gives a memorable turn as a diminutive ghostbuster.

Expert Review:
Poltergeist is perhaps the antithesis of every haunted house movie that came before it, substituting eerie bumps in the night with bombastic special effects and elaborate visual horrors. While such a technique may not be the preferred take on the subgenre, the summer blockbuster approach makes for a ghost story more sensational than spooky, allowing it to stand out in the crowd.
